A few weeks ago we posted a TOPIC TUESDAY about AHA’s. Well today we’re talking about another popular exfoliant, BHA’s.

BHA’s, aka Beta Hydroxy Acid, is an oil-loving acid. BHA is preferred for oily, acne-prone skin as well as for treating blackheads and whiteheads. BHA’s can get through the oil that clogs pores and helps to normalize the lining of the pore that contributes to acne.

Seriously, this is such a fun topic and once you understand BHA’s better, it will help you when choosing what skincare and ingredients are right for you. You know what they say: the more you know...

BHA’s have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. This is why BHA’s are oftentimes preferred for those struggling with rosacea. However, not everyone with rosacea can tolerate an exfoliant. It is best to experiment with a BHA product to see how rosacea responds. It is likely you’ll see less redness and smoother, even skin with fewer breakouts.

  • Salicylic Acid: derived from the Willow Bark Tree and others

  • Citric Acid: derived from citrus fruits and considered a crossover acid, meaning it can be an AHA or a BHA depending on its formulation.

It is important to note that with today’s technology, most of these acids are derived synthetically. This is to keep the acid stable, allow for use for those with allergies to natural substances, and control its strength. *It is imperative to use sunscreen when using any of the above acids. Exfoliants can make skin photosensitive, so a broad-spectrum SPF will help to protect the skin.*

Here’s hoping you feel a little more educated on BHA’s. Missed the blog on its counterpart: AHA’s? Check it out now!

Stay healthy, stay well, and have a beautiful day!

xoxo - Jessie
